Author and consultant with a passion for
sustainable governance;
honoring America's Covenant to build a Good Society;
and advancing the nation's Constitutional Heritage
Welcome to LarryArrington
Welcome to the official website of author and consultant Larry
Arrington. LarryArrington is a source for information about the
author's writings on the major public policy issues facing American
society at all levels of government, the challenges of contemporary
politics and governance, and ways to adapt to those challenges.
Arrington has more than three decades of experience at all levels of
government. A former county and city manager, he was raised near
Florida's capital city, Tallahassee. His father was a member of the
Florida Legislature, so Larry got introduced to Florida politics and
governance at an early age. He went on to receive his undergraduate
and graduate degrees in political science at Florida's first private
institution of higher learning, Stetson University. He spent part of
his college years working for the U.S. Congress, and returned to his
"field of dreams" to begin a career as a public administrator.
Arrington spent most of his career working for Volusia County
Government, the first county in Florida to adopt a progressive county
charter under the provisions of Article V of the Florida Constitution.
He began as an intern and ended his public administration career as
Volusia's county manager. Along the way, he worked with many of
Florida's most progressive state and local leaders, and was mentored by
Dr. Thomas C. Kelly, who upon retirement received the prestigious
Distinguished Service Award from the International City Management
Association.
Arrington writes from the bellwether state of Florida, which is a
microcosm of America and harbinger of things to come for the nation.
He uses the theory of sustainability as a way of understanding our
public challenges and the best ways of adapting to them. His aim is
build understanding of "sustainable governance" capable of helping
realize a vision of a future that seeks the over-arching goal of
sustainability: meeting the needs of the present generation without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Larry and his consulting business partner, Herb Marlowe, are co-authors
of the book, "Sustainable Governance: Renewing the Search." Larry has
completed a second book manuscript under the working title, "American
Covenant in Crisis: Lessons in Democracy, Sustainability and Common
Sense." The book will be available by mid-2011.
You are invited to read descriptions of both books at this website.
Other writings by Arrington and his colleagues will appear on this site
and at the Sustainable Governance Blog, where interested and engaged
citizens, public leaders and public administration professionals are
invited to enter the discussion.
In addition to his published writings, Arrington has helped develop
many community visions and strategic plans with Herb Marlowe and their
colleagues as part of their consulting practice. Their most recent work
for some of Florida's premier communities and public service
organizations employs sustainability as an organizing principle. Read
more about their work at their firm website.
You will see that they have worked for major cities and counties like
Orlando, Pinellas County Government, Tampa Bay Water, the wealthy City
of Naples on Florida's southwest coast, the poverty-ridden Glades area
of Western Palm Beach County, Brevard County Government on the Space
Coast, and many other communities and organizations throughout the
state's laboratories of democracy.
We welcome and invite you to review this site, and learn more about how
the vision for sustainable governance can be put to work to improve
America for future generations.
